Highlights from 2009 Spring Summit in Memphis, TN
April 23-26, 2009
Memphis, Tennessee was home to the Academy's 2009 Spring Summit. The historic Peabody Hotel set the stage for one of the best Summits in Academy history! Doug Hanson's high energy keynote speech, The Road to Success and Significance, motivated attendees and kicked off the event with a highly positive tone.
The educational sessions at the Summit received high marks from Members and included Opportunities in First Consultations, Estate Planning in a Low Interest Rate Environment and both Medicaid and Special Needs topics. The Academy entered into new territory with a session on Social Media and Social Networking. This session sparked a lot of conversation among attendees and promises to be a topic that is touched upon at future events. Far and away, the most talked about session was Marketing in this New Emerging Economy. In tough economic times, this session reminded Academy members they have the tools and resources to succeed; they just need to embrace and implement them.
The Breakout Room was filled with sessions for both Attorneys and their staff. Highlights included Top Ten Shortcuts to Avoid, Initial Consultation Workflow for Staff, and Effective Use of Promotional Products. The interactive style of these sessions allowed for great feedback, sharing and dialogue among members, which is one of the greatest benefits of Academy Summits.
Members left Memphis energized and ready to return to the office and begin practicing what was learned over the week. The Academy looks forward to another great Summit in the Fall of 2009 in San Diego.
“In 2003 I decided to implement a life balance decision to schedule my office 4 days per week. I was able to easily accomplish this with the assistance from the Academy systems which allow me to work smarter and not just longer. In addition, a Fellow Academy member also provided personal guidance to me on how he had implemented the same strategy some time ago in his practice. This change was implanted without a hitch and remains today.
For me, my membership in AAEPA is about much more than documents or strategies for providing quality estate planning services. It allows me to do all the things that the top estate planners do while maintaining the quality of life that I have chosen. I will never again feel like the practice of law is swallowing me up whole like Moby Dick!”
